In the heart of the enchanting rolling hills, dwelt a young shepherd. His life was untarnished, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his herd of ewes.
Their gentle baas and the rustling of the gales through the lone tree on the peak were his only co-dwellers. Day click here upon day, looking out for his wards instilled in him a sense of quiet fulfillment.
Yet, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would long for companionship. In one such instance because of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy conceived a troublesome plan.
Stories of wild beasts preying on sheep had been heard times and again in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One afternoon he raced into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank laughed for a couple of more days. But, one day, a real wolf actually attack the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Devastated, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the consequences of crying wolf.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once lost, is hard to regain. It's a story as relevant today as it was then.
